One Sentence, One Page: Clark Kent
Posted in comics, ink work, pencil drawing on November 8, 2010 by josheckPreviously on One Sentence, One Page: It Rained
Today’s sentence was submitted by Jeff Smith. He came up with his own version of a classic Ron Burgundy-ism:
“Clark Kent forgot to pay his cable bill.”
I consider lot of these One Page exercises to be rough drafts for illustration ideas later on. That way if they turn out crappy, I can just say, “Well, it’s only a rough draft.”
But if I do ever get the urge to do ‘em up right, I’ll do like the pros and draw on something big and then shrink them down. With this one, in particular, there were way too many small details being drawn in a tight space – and it shows.
It felt a bit like the old days, back before we knew there was any other way to do it.
One Sentence, One Page: It Rained

Today’s entry comes from a quote provided by James Wright, from one of Ken Bruen’s fantastic Jack Taylor crime novels.
“It rained, like it was personal.”

This first one is garbage. I was so disappointed with it, I didn’t even finish it.
I feel much better about this one. It’s definitely sloppy in a lot of spots (particularly the last panel…), but I’m getting more confident working with pen, and the improvement between these two pages (drawn roughly a month apart) is very encouraging.
One Sentence, One Page: Self-Promotion

Thanks to one of the scanners at work, I’m able to post two of my interpretations of the sentence:
“I’ve heard of self-promotion, but that’s ridiculous.” (Thanks, Carole!)
These aren’t as ridiculous as I was hoping they’d be. I could have pushed my imagination a bit harder, instead of just hurrying to the first and second ideas that popped into my head. I am noticing some slight improvements in my draftsmanship, though. The poses are coming to me more quickly, and I’m getting a little more confident with hand gestures.
One Sentence, One Page: Angry Aardvark
Posted in comics, pencil drawing, school on October 1, 2010 by josheckI sat in on a Sequential Art class last week with my friend, Kevin, and one of the assignments was to make a one page comic based on a single sentence given to them by a classmate. Since, tragically, I won’t be able to take that class this semester (or next, because it won’t be offered), I had Kevin give me a sentence and I tried to come up with a one page comic as quickly as possible.
“I rode an aardvark into town and for some reason, she got angry.”
I reeeaaallly want to do more of these. It’s like improv illustration. It’s hit-or-miss, for sure, but definitely a great exercise. Leave me a sentence – ANY sentence, random, boring, whatever – in the comments below, and I’ll see what I can do with it.
“Call me Oliver”
