The Monster Mask (completed)

Today’s sentence was submitted by Jeff Smith. He came up with his own version of a classic Ron Burgundy-ism:
“Clark Kent forgot to pay his cable bill.”
I consider lot of these One Page exercises to be rough drafts for illustration ideas later on. That way if they turn out crappy, I can just say, “Well, it’s only a rough draft.”
But if I do ever get the urge to do ‘em up right, I’ll do like the pros and draw on something big and then shrink them down. With this one, in particular, there were way too many small details being drawn in a tight space – and it shows.
It felt a bit like the old days, back before we knew there was any other way to do it.
One Sentence, One Page: It Rained

Today’s entry comes from a quote provided by James Wright, from one of Ken Bruen’s fantastic Jack Taylor crime novels.
“It rained, like it was personal.”

This first one is garbage. I was so disappointed with it, I didn’t even finish it.
I feel much better about this one. It’s definitely sloppy in a lot of spots (particularly the last panel…), but I’m getting more confident working with pen, and the improvement between these two pages (drawn roughly a month apart) is very encouraging.
Creature Feature!
Posted in creature sketches, ink work on October 20, 2010 by josheckWatching Pan’s Labyrinth got me in the mood to do some creature designs. Here’s what I came up with…
I’m trying to draw with ink more often so I don’t rely so much on erasing and correcting.
The Monster Mask (in progress)
Posted in digital coloring, ink work, pencil drawing on September 3, 2010 by josheckThis is an unpainted latex mask I’ve had for years. I drew it first with a non-photo blue pencil (the image had to be brightened so it could register on screen):
